SUSPENSION

Type
The type of suspension defines the basic design of the suspension components and geometry. Settings range from Independent to solid axels.

Spring rates
Spring rates affect how much and how fast weight is transferred to different parts of the body. Spring rates are measured in lbs/in. There are several types of springs used in cars today. The coil-over spring is common in most passenger cars and consists of a wound spring connected from the body to the suspension. The leaf-spring is a series of flat steel bars suspended from the body to the suspension. The player can also mount the suspension rigidly to the chassis (no springs). Once the type of spring has been specified, the player can set the rate of the spring.

Damper rates
Dampers or shock absorbers are, in basic terms, velocity sensitive springs. The damper will produce more force the faster it is caused to move. The damper can be adjusted in "bump" and "rebound". Bump refers to the rate when the damper is compressed and rebound refers to the rate when the damper is expanded.

Travel
The suspension travel is adjusted to allow the suspension to move with certain settings. Travel can be adjusted in above and below "normal" or static ride height. This can be used to simulate the effect of "tie straps" that are used on the front of the car to allow the front tires to leave the ground quicker. The suspension connection point can also be adjusted.
